Why should you use olive oil for hair? Why is good for your hair? Well, the truth is that the benefits that this has for our body are well known, especially against cholesterol and hypertension; but not everyone knows olive oil benefits for hair: something that for sure is of interest for those who have alopecia problems, and wish to get a FUE hair transplant.
The reason is that this liquid fart obtained form olives is rich in vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats, so - among other things - it can hydrate, repair and give shine to hair, as well as stimulate hair growth. But, does olive oil help hair growth? How should we use it in hair? What are its real properties? What are the advantages and disadvantages of olive oil for hair? In this post we are going to answer all these questions, and tell you everything you need to know about the so-called "liquid gold". Do you want to learn more?
Why is olive oil good for hair?
So, what does olive oil do for your hair? Actually, a lot. In addition to moisturising dry hair, it is also suitable - used with moderation - to treat oily hair; but these are just some of the many benefits of oil pressed from olives: if you want to know everything that it can do for your hair, check the list below including olive oil benefits.
Relieves irritation and itching:
One of its most important properties is that it is an emollient: that is, it can soften inflammations, so it serves as a remedy to reduce inflammation and relieve irritation when the scalp suffers from this type of problem, for example due to psoriasis. It´s also a well-known home remedy to use olive oil and lemon for hair dandruff.
Strengthens hair:
This natural oil extracted from olives contains powerful antioxidants that protect hair from external aggressions, such as the action of solar radiation, making hair stronger and less brittle.
Stimulates hair growth:
You can use olive oil for hair growth due to its properties to regenerate damaged skin tissues, since it contains elements such as vitamin C, which stimulates collagen production and strengthens hair follicles.
Provides shine to hair:
As we mentioned before, one of the best-known properties of this oil made by pressing fresh olives is that, by nourishing and repairing hair, it makes hair look shiny and smooth.
Prevents hair shedding:
By strengthening hair due to its high concentration of vitamins E and C, two powerful antioxidants that protect hair, olive oil keeps hair healthy, and therefore delays hair shedding.
Olive oil hydrates hair:
Thanks to its oily texture, has a great hydrating power, covering hair fibres and penetrating inside them, protecting them and retaining moisture. Therefore, the use of olive oil is highly recommended if you have dry hair.
Ends with split ends:
Thanks to its moisturising properties, is perfect for repairing hair fibres and removing split ends from hair.
Eliminates frizzy hair:
Frizzy hair occurs when, due to lack of water, hair fibres expand. Therefore, the great moisturising ability of olive oil manages to put an end to frizz.
How to use olive oil for hair
As we have just seen, there are many benefits that this healthy liquid fat obtained from olives can provide to our hair, especially if we have any problem related to lack of hydration or nutrients. But, how do we benefit from its properties? What is the correct way to carry out an olive oil hair treatment?
A good and very simple option is to perform a hair massage with olive oil. To prepare a hair massage, use lukewarm oil and apply it to hair by gently massaging the scalp with your fingertips for about 10 minutes, rinsing hair afterwards to remove all oil.
If you have problems with split ends, all you have to do is apply a few drops to your hair, spread it out, and wait about 20 minutes. Then wash your hair well, preferably with lukewarm water and applying some conditioner.
Another option is to use olive oil for hair overnight, applying it before going to bed and sleeping with it on (it is highly recommended to wrap your hair with a cloth or a cap to avoid staining the pillow). When you wake up, you will have to wash your hair well to remove all the oil. But be careful, because if you suffer from oily hair, leaving 'pure' olive oil in hair too long can aggravate the problem.
If you prefer not to keep oil in your hair for that long, you still can get good results if you let oil on your hair for at least two hours. Another interesting option is to prepare an egg and olive oil hair mask, which we explain below how to be prepared.
How to prepare an olive oil hair mask
This kind of oil can be mixed with other natural ingredients to create a simple and effective hair mask. We can use, for example, honey and olive oil in hair, and other ingredients such as coconut oil, banana, or avocado. But certainly, the most popular hair mask is the one that uses egg and olive oil.
To prepare it, take four tablespoons of olive oil and mix them with an egg yolk (you can also use the whole egg); once ready, spread the mixture over your hair, and let it act for about 15 minutes before rinsing and washing your hair with lukewarm water. How often should you put in your hair using this mask? Well, you can apply this mask up to twice a week: by doing so you’ll get to provide nutrients to your hair, and give your hair strength and shine.
There are many ways in which we can take advantage of the benefits of his healthy liquid fat.
