Scabs after your hair transplant
By Prof. Dr. Soner Tatlidede 2019-09-30
After a hair transplant, scabs may appear sometimes due to many reasons. Actually it is a normal phenomenon and you don´t have to worry about it, but what are the causes? Are the new follicles affected? How long it takes before scabs fall off after the hair transplant? In the following article we will answer to these and other questions that many patients ask before getting a hair surgery with FUE in Turkey.
Why scabs appear after a FUE hair transplant?
Scabs appear after the surgery mainly due to a couple of reasons:
1. Some liquid may appear in the scalp after the intervention because of the many punctures done to implant the grafts, causing an oedema because the area swells and yellow fluid appear in the damaged area. It´s the same that happens for example when hitting a knee. In a couple of days after the transplant, fluids will be evacuated from the scalp either through the pores or from the channels. The scalp will dry, so the crusts will be remnants of dead skin.
2. Some blood stains or spots could appear when we open channels and when we collect the grafts. These points of blood will also dry and turn into scabs after 10 days.
How to get rid of scabs after hair transplant
When do scabs fall off after hair transplant? Well, scabs usually fall off completely after the tenth day from your hair surgery. The most important thing is not to pick or scratch the scabs, because it could cause an infection and put in danger the survival of the grafts.
It´s also important to keep the scalp clear of crusts. To do so, you can perform a massage in the head with your fingertips. First of all, you should apply Clinicana's froth on the area where the crust is and let it take effect during about ten minutes; after that, it will be moistened and will be easy to remove it.
For the massage, do not use your nails; just remove slowly the crust with your fingertips, but take care not to scratch blood stains because you could move transplanted follicles.
And, how to remove scabs after the hair transplant? Here comes the second step, where you have to apply Clinicana’s shampoo over the same area to remove completely these scabs, and then wash it with warm water. Repeat this action in the next days if it doesn’t disappear completely, until you see the area is clean.
What if I don´t complete the removal of crusts or scabs after the hair transplant?
If you leave the crusts on, they will block the pores and the breathing of the skin. At Clinicana we always inform our patients carefully about the procedure they must follow and the importance of removing the crusts and the scabs 10 days after the intervention.
Will scabs appear in the donor area?
Scabs may also appear in the donor area -on the nape- and you have to clean and remove them, too. If you don’t clean them, you may acquire infections or inflammations.
At Clinicana we recommend our patients to take pictures of transplanted and donor area after the tenth day of their operation, and send them to us to follow up their case and to be sure that the scabs were removed. If everything is normal, new hair will start to grow.
