Cheap hair transplant: do you know the risks?
By Prof. Dr. Soner Tatlidede 2020-06-30
A cheap hair transplant may seem very attractive due to the low prices it offers; hair transplantation are in fashion now more than ever and we see how celebrities or even football players get one, so more and more men decide every day that they wish to recover their hair and younger appearance, too.
However, we must not forget that we are talking about a surgical intervention seeking long-term results. Many people seeking for hair transplant cost in Turkey, UK or any other country try to get the cheapest fee for their operation, and end up choosing clinics with little or no guarantees just to get a hair transplant at low cost: what's the real price we finally pay by choosing this? Be careful, because in the end you get what you pay for... and it's your health what we are talking about.
What are the risks of a low cost FUE hair transplant?
Due to the growing demand of these interventions, many organizations and experts are working in the last years to alert patients about the risks of a low price hair transplant and its consequences: not just for your hair or your pocket, but for your health. All these warnings can be resumed in one: do not think only about cheapest fares when looking for a hair treatment, and get yourself well informed before letting your health in the hands of any doctor or clinic.
Every day we see ads everywhere offering a cheap hair transplant in Turkey. Thus, many clinics in UK try to compete offering very cheap fees that actually cannot comply with; and if they do, it´s at the cost of a very high risk not for them... but for the patient. It´s very common to see in some well-reputed clinics how patients come for a second hair transplant or aesthetic operation, trying to solve the problems created by a cheap and low quality previous transplant.
In the end, a clinic in the UK can't compete in pricing with Turkey, and if you choose a cheap hair transplant in the UK you assume high risks like ending up with bleedings in the scalp, bald spots, scars for life, infections, anaesthesia side effects, hair with unnatural look, sparse and poor quality hair... And the point is that if damages to scalp or donor area are severe due to bad practices in the 1st intervention... a 2nd hair transplant may not be able to fix that.
Beware of medical teams without necessary experience
Another risk associated with a cheap FUE hair transplant is that clinics following this strategy -not just in the UK, but also in other countries, even Turkey- must hire low-skilled and poorly trained medical personnel without necessary experience to be able to pay their salaries: and this is a direct risk for patients, who in most cases completely ignore this situation because they have been deceived by low prices, ads and offers that simply do not tell the whole truth.
Choosing a clinic with medical teams without the skills and experience needed for a hair transplant can end up in very serious aesthetic and health problems, including unnatural front lines, uneven distribution of hair in scalp, areas with less hair density than others...
We find some clinics offering a cheap hair transplant in Europe or the UK that pretend to perform a FUE hair transplant for £2,000 or even less: this is impossible if we consider that the normal cost of this operation in the UK ranges from £6,000 (minimum) up to £30,000, while the same operation in Turkey -where the cost of living is considerable lower- has an average cost that ranges from £1,300 to £2,200, for implanting 4,000 follicles or more. It´s simply insane.
Some of these clinics try to deceive patients no making distinction about the number of hair or follicles included in the price (as if they were the same), or with the technique included with that particular fee (many still use the old FUT method). Besides, many of them don´t take into account that health comes first than money, and that not all patients are suitable for a hair transplant. Just a simple advice: if someone offers you a hair treatment much more cheaper than usual... just run.
What is the best country to get a hair transplant?
Turkey has a flourishing health industry, and it´s the top country of the world for hair transplants since it has some of the best medical facilities in Europe, with state-of-the-art equipment and highly qualified doctor and surgeons that use the last techniques in medicine. Besides, a hair transplant in this country can be up to 10 times cheaper compared with other countries like the UK or the United States.
But remember: pricing is not the most important when we talk about health. Both the clinic and its medical team must be trustworthy and offer quality services and enough guarantees before, during and after treatment. Has the clinic any international health certification? What guarantees does it offer? What is the experience of its medical team? What are the reviews of other patients? These are the questions that really matter.
